“She knew only good. And she knew only friends… Lucy was a shining light in a world too often filled with darkness.”
-Mark Saluke
Lucy Saluke
Dog | Best Friend | Guide
Lucy Saluke was more than just a dog—she was a best friend, a guide, and a source of unconditional love. Born under a trailer in Cope, Indiana, one of nine siblings, she was briefly known as Madora when she arrived at the Morgan County Humane Society in April 2006. But everything changed when she was adopted by Cindy White and entered Mark’s life in June of that same year. With her reddish-blond coat, floppy ears, and curious eyes, Lucy quickly became an unforgettable presence. Whether stubbornly leading Mark on walks to her favorite spot by the river or curling up beside him during quiet moments, Lucy moved through the world with joy, curiosity, and a steadfast spirit.
Drawn to Mark early on, Lucy seemed to sense his struggles and decided he needed her to help him change his thoughts and change his life. She became a constant companion through grief, recovery, and healing. Long before Mark understood Taoism, Lucy was already living its wisdom—grounded in presence, balance, and peace. Her calm, intuitive nature served as a guide through even the darkest moments. Along the way, she shared her home and heart with a cast of step-siblings: Jasper White, Freckles and Moonlight Wright, and Buddy Saluke—now all joyfully reunited in the great pet playground above. Lucy’s legacy lives on not only in Mark’s life but in every story shared on these pages.
