“It was almost as if she (Lucy) had a very specific purpose in taking me there (river), to remind me: Go with the flow. Be present in the moment. Find joy in the smallest and seemingly most ordinary things. And slow down.”
-Mark Saluke
Lao Tzu
Philosopher | Founder of Taoism
Lao Tzu (also spelled Laozi) is the ancient Chinese philosopher credited with founding Taoism and writing the Tao Te Ching, one of the most influential spiritual and philosophical texts in history. Believed to have lived during the 6th or 4th century BCE, Lao Tzu’s teachings emphasize simplicity, balance, humility, and living in harmony with the natural world. Though details of his life remain uncertain, legend tells us he was a wise sage who, disillusioned with society, wrote the Tao Te Ching before leaving civilization behind forever.
Lao Tzu’s philosophy of “the Way” (or Tao) offers a peaceful, non-resistant approach to life that continues to inspire millions around the world. For author Mark Saluke, these teachings became deeply personal—reflected in the behavior and spirit of his dog, Lucy. In Lucy’s Way, Mark explores how her presence quietly mirrored many of the timeless principles found in Taoism. On this page, you’ll find Taoist resources that illuminate the ideas behind the book and offer gentle guidance for your own path.
